The assignment comes before ability shows up. Learn why waiting to feel ready is keeping you stuck—and what to do instead.
You're waiting to feel ready. You think the ability has to show up first, then you'll take the shot. That's backwards. The assignment was given before the ability was visible, and until you understand that, you'll stay stuck.
Here's what I mean. Life doesn't hand you a job and say, "Once you've mastered everything, you can start." It hands you the job and says, "Figure it out." The ability comes through doing the work, not before it. You don't get confident by thinking confident thoughts in the mirror. You get confident by showing up when you're terrified and doing it anyway.
I see this all the time with guys who reach out to Success Scholars. They want to start a business but feel like they need to know more first. They want to ask someone out but need to feel more attractive first. They want to lead but need to feel more qualified first. All of this is the assignment being pushed back because the ability hasn't made a public appearance yet.
But here's the truth: the assignment was given before the ability was visible. That's how growth actually works.
Think about your first day at any job you've ever had. You didn't know everything. You were confused half the time. But you started anyway, and somewhere between day one and day thirty, the confusion turned into competence. The ability wasn't waiting in some vault for you to unlock it. It was being built in real-time through the assignment itself.
This mindset shift changes everything. Instead of waiting for the green light that never comes, you start moving with incomplete information. You make mistakes. You look stupid sometimes. And that's exactly where growth lives.
The catch is that most people are too uncomfortable with this. They'd rather stay small and safe than risk looking like they don't know what they're doing. So they wait. And waiting feels responsible, like they're being strategic. They're not. They're just afraid.
Your move is simple: identify one thing you've been putting off because you didn't feel ready. That's your assignment. Not next month. Not after you learn more. Now. Call that girl. Start that side project. Have that conversation with your mentor. Jump into that difficult conversation at work.
The ability will show up because you're doing the work. That's how it always happens. You don't become a writer by waiting to feel like a writer. You become a writer by writing. You don't become confident by thinking positive thoughts. You become confident by doing hard things when you're not sure you can.
Stop waiting for the ability to show up first. The assignment is already here. What are you going to do about it?
